NFPA has issued the 2024 edition of NFPA 70E, the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. It took effect in May 2023. NFPA 70E is the main US reference for arc-flash and shock protection, and it is closely related to CSA Z462 in Canada.

Notable changes

  • Emergency response is now part of the job safety plan, so crews plan how they would respond to an incident before work starts.
  • Absence of voltage must be verified at each point of work, not only at the point of isolation.
  • Equipment condition: a new informative annex addresses how the maintenance condition of equipment affects risk.
  • Protective equipment: requirements for leather protectors now reference ASTM F3258, and hearing protection is addressed inside the arc-flash boundary.
  • Definitions are consolidated into Article 100.

Why it matters in live facilities

Most of our electrical work in pumping stations, plants and campuses happens in facilities that stay energized around us. Lock-out procedures, verification of absence of voltage and well-maintained equipment are what make that work safe. Updates like these feed directly into our safety procedures and crew training.
