On March 4, 2024, CSA Group released the 26th edition of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CSA C22.1:24). The code is updated every three years, and each province and territory then adopts it, usually with its own amendments.

Highlights

  • Renewables and energy storage. The largest set of revisions is in Section 64, reflecting how quickly battery storage and on-site generation are growing.
  • EV energy management. Updated provisions for managing electric vehicle charging loads.
  • Healthcare facilities. Revised requirements for electrical systems in healthcare settings.
  • Pools, hot tubs and spas. Changes to bonding and disconnecting means in Section 68.
  • Maintenance worker safety. Measures to reduce arcing-fault clearing times on overcurrent devices rated 1200 A or more.
  • Temporary installations. Ground fault protection for temporary outdoor installations such as event tents.

What happens next

Until a province adopts the 2024 edition, the previous code remains in force there. We expect adoption across provinces through 2025, and we’ll follow it closely for the jurisdictions where we work.
